Video editing and VFX#

Edit, grade, and composite video on a workstation host as if you were at the workstation. This configuration provides several displays for the timeline, viewer, and scopes, and uses editing hardware connected to your own computer.

For example:

  • An editor cuts on a studio workstation from home, with a DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel and Stream Deck on their desk.
  • A colorist grades on a calibrated display, then shows the grade to a client.

Applies to#

  • Session settings: Jump Desktop on Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, and Android Beta.
  • Several displays and editing hardware: Jump Desktop on Windows and macOS.
  • Fluid connections to a Windows or Mac host with Jump Desktop Connect.
  • The Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan for bandwidth above 20 mbps, more than one virtual display, and editing hardware redirection.

Set up the network#

Use Ethernet on both the host and the device you connect from. See Set up the network.

Set up several displays#

To give the timeline, viewer, and scopes each a separate screen, do the following in Jump Desktop for Windows or Mac during a Fluid session:

  1. Choose Display > Presets > Matched Virtual Displays for one virtual display per screen, each in its own window.
  2. For a display that requires a fixed size, such as a 3840 × 2160 grading display, configure fixed virtual displays instead.

A session supports up to 4 virtual displays (3 on an Intel Mac host). When you have more than one screen, Matched Virtual Displays keeps Retina off to limit the pixel load. See Use virtual displays on Windows and Mac and Keep the pixel load in check.

Choose session settings#

During a Fluid session, open the Remote menu and choose:

Tip

When you connect from Jump Desktop on Windows or Mac to an Apple silicon Mac with more than 2 displays, choose Fluid 2.0 instead. For now, Fluid 2.0 outperforms the hardware encoder on a Mac in some cases, including this one.

To choose these settings on iPhone, iPad, and Android Beta, tap the Settings button in the session toolbar, then tap Remote. Jump Desktop saves your choices for that host.

Use your editing hardware#

Redirect editing hardware connected to your computer, such as the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel, Stream Deck, and drawing tablets, so the editing app on the host uses the hardware directly:

  1. Turn on USB redirection for the host. USB redirection is off by default. See Turn on USB redirection.
  2. During the session, choose Remote > Devices, select the device, and then click I Understand in the firmware update warning.

Redirecting input devices other than game controllers requires the Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan. For other requirements, see Redirect USB devices. If an app on your computer, such as the Stream Deck app, is using a device, release the device in that app first.

Of the DaVinci Resolve panels, only the Micro Color Panel is currently supported. Support for the other panels is in development.

For roto and paint work with pen pressure and tilt, you can use Remote > Stylus instead of redirecting the tablet. Stylus works from Jump Desktop for Windows or Mac to a Windows or Mac host and requires the Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan. See Pen and stylus input.

Show your work and collaborate#

To present an edit to a colleague or client, or to give them control, have them connect to the workstation with Ask to Share Screen; several people can watch simultaneously. Screen sharing sessions do not use virtual displays.

Check that it worked#

  • The Display menu lists one virtual display per screen, marked Virtual.
  • In connection statistics, Color shows 4:2:0 8bit, and Frames stays close to Max Frames during playback. If Frames drops, see Slow or laggy sessions.
  • A check mark appears next to each redirected device in Devices, and your editing app responds to it.

Advanced settings#

Change these settings only when they suit your configuration.

  • Maximum Bandwidth above 20 mbps: on the Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan, you can test a Maximum Bandwidth value above 20 mbps.

    Warning

    A higher limit increases network load and can degrade performance.

  • Color Passthrough: keep it off unless you work on a calibrated display; see Color-accurate work with Color Passthrough.
