Set virtual displays for a team

Team administrators can control virtual displays on their team's computers from Connect Settings in the Teams dashboard, to give everyone the same display setup or stop users creating virtual displays. For example:

  • Lock every session on a review station to an exact resolution and refresh rate.
  • Offer a standard set of office monitor resolutions, so each user gets the closest match to their screens.
  • Keep virtual displays on a render computer after users disconnect, or always remove them.

Applies to

  • Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan.
  • Team administrators.
  • Remote computers running Jump Desktop Connect 10 or later on Windows (x64, including Windows Server), macOS, or Linux (beta). See Requirements.

Open the virtual display settings

  1. In the Teams dashboard, open your team. Under Tasks, click Connect Settings.
  2. Click New Configuration, or click Edit configuration next to an existing one.
  3. Scroll to the Virtual Displays group.

Allow Virtual Displays

Allow Virtual Displays is on by default. Clear it to stop users creating virtual displays on the computers the configuration is assigned to. When it's off:

  • Jump Desktop doesn't offer virtual displays for those computers, and Connect refuses requests to create them.
  • Virtual displays already in use are removed as soon as the computer receives the configuration.
  • Fixed Virtual Displays are ignored.

Fixed virtual displays

Fixed Virtual Displays sets the virtual displays that appear on the remote computer when someone connects, and the resolutions each one offers. With several resolutions, the closest match to the user's monitors is used. With a single resolution, every session uses that exact size and refresh rate.

  1. Next to Fixed Virtual Displays, click Configure.
  2. In Fixed Virtual Display Configuration, click Add Display for each virtual display you want, up to 4.
  3. Click a display to edit its resolutions.
    • Include Common Resolutions (on by default) offers standard resolutions such as 1080p and 4K.
    • To add your own, under Custom Resolutions, click Add. Pick a preset (1080p, 1440p, 4K UHD, 5K, 6K, or UltraWide) or enter Width, Height, and Hz, then click Add.
    • To lock an exact size, turn off Include Common Resolutions and add a single custom resolution.
  4. Click Save Changes.
  5. Repeat for each display. To remove a display, click its delete icon.
  6. Click Apply & Save All. The setting now shows the number of displays, for example 2 Displays.
  7. Click Save to save the configuration.

Custom resolutions can be up to 16000×16000 and 500 Hz, in whole numbers. If you turn off Include Common Resolutions and add no custom resolutions, the display gets 1920×1080 at 60 Hz.

Message Meaning
Please enter valid positive numbers. A value is missing, zero, or negative.
Maximum resolution is 16000×16000. Width or height is above 16000.
Maximum refresh rate is 500 Hz. Hz is above 500.
This resolution already exists. The display already has that custom resolution.

How fixed virtual displays behave:

  • Connect creates them when someone connects, not when the computer starts. If someone is already connected when the computer receives the configuration, Connect applies them right away.
  • While they're set, they replace the virtual displays users choose in Jump Desktop. Users can't create or change virtual displays on that computer.
  • When everyone disconnects, they're removed, unless Persistent is Always Enabled.
  • Removing them from the configuration removes them from the computer.

Persistent

Persistent controls whether virtual displays stay on the remote computer after users disconnect. For how kept displays behave, see Keep virtual displays after you disconnect.

Value Effect
Client Controlled (default) Each user decides with Keep After Disconnect in Jump Desktop. Fixed virtual displays are removed when everyone disconnects.
Always Enabled Virtual displays stay after users disconnect, including fixed virtual displays. Users can't change Keep After Disconnect in Jump Desktop.
Always Disabled Virtual displays are removed when the user who created them disconnects. Users can't change Keep After Disconnect in Jump Desktop.

Persistent doesn't create virtual displays on its own. It only decides whether displays that already exist stay.

Assign the configuration

Assign the configuration to computers or Access Groups. See Assign a configuration.

Result

  • Online computers receive the configuration within about 20 seconds.
  • With Fixed Virtual Displays set, connect to one of the computers. In Jump Desktop's Display menu, the remote computer's displays are marked Virtual and use the resolutions you set.

Limitations

  • Intel Mac remote computers support up to 3 virtual displays.
  • Screen sharing connections, such as Ask to Share Screen, don't use virtual displays.
