Multi-display Mac workstations

A Mac with an M-series Pro, Max, or Ultra chip, such as a Mac Studio, can drive several displays in one session. On these Macs, Fluid 2.0 usually performs better than hardware encoding, and keeping Retina off keeps the pixel load manageable.

Applies to

  • Jump Desktop on Windows and macOS.
  • A Mac remote computer with an M-series Pro, Max, or Ultra chip, running Jump Desktop Connect.
  • More than one virtual display and bandwidth above 20 mbps need the Jump Desktop for Teams Enterprise plan.

Set up the session

In Jump Desktop for Windows or Mac, during a Fluid session:

  1. Network: use Ethernet on both the remote computer and the device you connect from. See Set up the network.
  2. Displays: choose Display > Presets > Matched Virtual Displays for one virtual display per screen. More than one virtual display needs the Enterprise plan. With more than one screen, this preset keeps Retina off; see Keep the pixel load in check.
  3. Codec: choose Remote > Codec > Fluid 2.0. On these Macs it usually performs better than Hardware. See Which codec to use.
  4. Maximum Bandwidth: raise it above 20 mbps only when both networks have the headroom; otherwise a higher limit can cause packet loss. Above 20 mbps needs the Enterprise plan.

Check that it worked

In connection statistics, Encoder shows Fluid 2.0, Displays lists one virtual display per screen, and Frames stays close to Max Frames while the screens change. If Frames drops, see Slow or laggy sessions.
